Background Information

The Social Costs

  • A very high proportion of the total prison population has been in care and this is an enormous social and financial burden.
  • The Police and Judicial costs of dealing with offenders who have been in care are very substantial and growing.
  • Because of the basic inadequacies of many who have been in care, they inevitably constitute a very heavy burden in terms of social welfare resources.
  • In view of the fact that many of those in care have serious drug abuse problems, they generate an enormous drain on national resources because of the escalating levels of drug-related crime and also the high cost of drug rehabilitation.

In terms of the national economy, the situation is extremely grave. In terms of the fabric of our society, it is potentially disastrous.

Although many useful initiatives have been and are being taken the fundamental problem is not being effectively addressed. Project Caleb is being developed in the context of a new approach based upon total commitment by dedicated, Christian-based, multidisciplinary professional teams.
